For speeches at events, a wireless handheld microphone is the safe choice; for vocals, a dynamic vocal mic like the Shure SM58. If you need your hands free, go for a headset. Here's an overview of which microphone suits which purpose.
01. Wireless or wired?
- Wired microphones are affordable and immune to interference. Ideal when the person stays in one place: singer at a mic stand, instruments, lectern.
- Wireless microphones give you freedom of movement. They're the standard for hosting, speeches and weddings.
With wireless microphones, the number matters: each microphone used at the same time needs its own wireless channel. Plan a spare.

Wireless handheld microphones are the standard at events: they pass easily from hand to hand.
02. Dynamic or condenser?
- Dynamic microphones are robust and mainly pick up what's happening directly in front of them. That's why they're the first choice on loud stages. Examples: Shure SM58, Sennheiser E935.
- Condenser microphones are more sensitive and sound more detailed. They suit acoustic instruments, choirs and drum overheads, but need phantom power from the mixing console.
03. The right microphone for every use
- Speeches and hosting: Wireless handheld transmitter, for example Shure QLXD2 or Sennheiser G4.
- Presentations with slides or movement: Headset or lavalier microphone, so your hands are free.
- Lectern: Gooseneck microphone like the Shure MX418.
- Panel discussion at a table: One microphone per person, plus a handheld microphone for questions from the audience.
- Singing: Dynamic vocal microphone, wired or as a wireless handheld.
- Band: Instrument microphones for kick drum, snare, toms and guitar amps, condenser microphones as overheads.
04. Common mistakes
- Speakers behind the microphone: causes feedback. Always place speakers in front of the people speaking.
- Too few wireless channels: At panels and weddings, more people often speak than planned.
- No sound check: Test each microphone with the person who will be using it.
- Flat batteries: Put in fresh batteries or charged rechargeables before the event.
You'll find all microphones with prices under Rent a microphone. For conferences with audio, video and live streaming, there are ready-made setups on the page Conference equipment in Berlin.
