As a DJ, the mixer is the central element of your setup. It connects your different music sources and allows you to create seamless transitions and impressive effects. In this guide, we focus on the differences between digital and analog DJ mixers, their advantages and disadvantages and what you should look out for when connecting playback devices such as CDJs and turntables.

ANALOG DJ MIXER

Let’s start with the analog mixers traditionally used in the DJ scene, such as the Allen & Heath Xone:92 or Xone:96

FunctionalityAnalog mixers take the analog signal from your playback devices (such as turntables or CDJs) and mix it by physically routing it through resistors, potentiometers and faders. The input signal is not converted or processed. They amplify the signal and then pass it on to your speakers – just as it was fed in from the playback devices. Depending on the design, there are some advantages and disadvantages that you should be aware of.

Advantages:

  • Sound quality: Many DJs prefer the warm, natural sound that analog mixers deliver. The sound is a subjective perception and should therefore be evaluated individually by everyone. Modern digital DJ mixers such as the DJM 900 NXS2 from Pioneer offer the same sound quality as analog consoles.
  • Simplicity: Analog mixers are often less complex to operate as they offer fewer functions due to their design. Each button and each potentiometer on the control panel has exactly one function, making analog DJ mixers more intuitive to use.
  • Reliability: They have fewer moving parts and are often more robust against software errors or digital noise.

Disadvantages:

  • Size and weight: Analog mixers are often larger and heavier.
  • Limited functions: They offer less creative functions such as integrated effects or MIDI control.
  • Maintenance: Analog components such as faders and knobs can wear out and must be serviced or replaced regularly.

DIGITAL DJ MIXER

Now to the digital mixers that are becoming increasingly popular in the modern DJ scene. The most prominent representatives include devices from Pioneer DJ such as the DJM 900 NXS2 or DJM V10.

How it works: Digital mixers convert the incoming analog signal into a digital format using a D/A converter. Further signal processing then takes place digitally, similar to a computer. Digital DJ mixers thus enable the use of complex effects and functions within the console, without the need for additional devices such as the RMX-1000 remix station from Pioneer DJ

Advantages:

  • Versatility: Digital mixers offer a wide range of functions, including effects, looping and MIDI control. Many digital DJ mixers already have built-in effects sections.
  • Compactness: Some digital DJ mixers are lighter and more compact than analog mixers. However, the differences between the DJM series from Pioneer and the Xones from Allen & Heath are hardly relevant.
  • Integration: Easy integration with software and digital recording systems. Many digital DJ mixers can be connected to a laptop via USB, which enables additional functions.

Disadvantages:

  • Sound quality: Some DJs notice a less warm sound compared to analog mixers.
  • Complexity: The multitude of functions can be overwhelming for beginners. In contrast to analog mixing consoles, some digital mixers are less intuitive to use.
  • Dependence on software: Old mixing consoles in particular can sometimes have software problems because the manufacturer has discontinued support for the device, which increases the likelihood of failures. However, our DJ mixing consoles are always up to date and therefore do not have this problem.

CONNECTING PLAYERS

Regardless of whether you are using a digital or analog mixer, it is important to know how to connect playback devices correctly. Turntables and CDJs are essentially different and must be connected to different inputs.

  • Record player:
    • Turntables must be connected to the phono inputs as they emit a weaker signal than other audio sources.
    • Make sure that you connect the ground cables of the turntables to the mixer to avoid electrical hum.

  • CDJs
    :

    • CDJs are connected to the line inputs of the mixer as they emit a linear signal.
    • Make sure that the cinch cables are connected in stereo.

ADVANCED FUNCTIONS

  • Effects: Learn how to creatively use effects such as echo, reverb or filters.
  • MIDI control: With digital mixers, you can use MIDI to your advantage to control software or external devices.
  • Recording: Many mixers, especially digital ones, offer the option of recording your sets directly.

INTEGRATION WITH DJ SOFTWARE

Digital mixers can often be integrated directly with DJ software such as Serato or Traktor, giving you additional creative options.

  • MIDI mapping: You can customize the buttons and faders of your mixer to control different functions in your DJ software.
  • Audio interface: Many digital mixers also serve as an audio interface, which makes it easier to route audio signals in your software.

The choice between a digital and an analog mixer ultimately depends on your personal preferences, your style and your needs as a DJ. Analog mixers are ideal for purists who value simplicity and sound quality. Digital mixers, on the other hand, offer more flexibility and features for DJs who want to expand their creativity through technology.
